Arkansas River Class Ratings Explained: I Through V

When you're shopping for a rafting trip, you'll see rapids rated from Class I to Class V (sometimes written as Class 1-5 in Roman numerals). Here's what each class means and which of our trips feature them.

Class I: Easy

Moving water with small waves. Minimal maneuvering required. Think of a lazy river with a slight current.

Class II: Novice

Straightforward rapids with wide channels. Some maneuvering required. Fun splashes but nothing intimidating. Our Bighorn Sheep Canyon trip features Class II-III rapids: the lower end of the range is right here.

Class III: Intermediate

Moderate, irregular waves. Strong eddies and currents. Requires significant maneuvering. This is where the real fun begins. Most of our Bighorn Sheep Canyon rapids are Class III.

Class IV: Advanced

Intense, powerful rapids requiring precise boat handling. Large waves, holes, and constricted passages. Scouting from shore may be necessary. Our Royal Gorge and All Day Rafting trips feature Class IV rapids.

Class V: Expert

Extremely long, obstructed, or very violent rapids. Significant hazard to life in event of a mishap. Only for experienced paddlers with excellent fitness. The highest end of our Royal Gorge trip (Class III-V) reaches Class V at peak water levels.
