10 Essential River Safety Tips Every Rafter Should Know

10 Essential River Safety Tips Every Rafter Should Know
With over 40 years of guiding experience on the Arkansas River, our team knows a thing or two about river safety. Here are 10 essential tips that every rafter, beginner or expert, should know.
1. Always Wear Your PFD
Your Personal Flotation Device (life jacket) should be snug and properly buckled at all times while on or near the river. No exceptions.
2. Listen to Your Guide
Your guide has spent hundreds (often thousands) of hours on this specific river. When they give a command, follow it immediately. In whitewater, seconds matter.
3. Keep Your Feet Up If You Fall In
If you end up in the water, float on your back with your feet pointed downstream and toes up. This protects your body from underwater obstacles.
4. Hold Your Paddle Correctly
A paddle flying out of someone's hands is one of the most common raft injuries. Use the T-grip hand position and keep a firm grip, especially approaching rapids.
5. Dress for the Water, Not the Air
Even on a 90-degree day, the Arkansas River is cold (typically 45-55 degrees). Wear synthetic, quick-dry clothing. Never wear cotton.
6. Stay Hydrated
Sun, exertion, and altitude (we're at 5,300 feet!) combine to dehydrate you faster than you'd expect. Drink plenty of water before and after your trip.
7. Apply Sunscreen Generously
The Colorado sun at altitude is intense. Apply SPF 30+ waterproof sunscreen 30 minutes before your trip and bring extra for reapplication.
8. Secure Everything
Anything not tied down can be lost in the rapids. Use straps for sunglasses, leave jewelry at camp, and use waterproof cases for electronics.
9. Know the Rescue Position
If a guide throws you a rope, grab it and pull it to your chest while floating on your back. Let the current and the rope do the work; don't try to swim against the river.
10. Respect the River
The Arkansas River is a powerful natural force. Stay within your skill level, follow your guide's instructions, and remember that the goal is to have fun while staying safe.
